Why Do Some Years Have 53 Weeks?

The ISO week numbering system (ISO 8601) defines Week 1 as the week containing the first Thursday of the year. If January 1 falls on a Thursday (or Wednesday in a leap year), the year will have 53 ISO weeks.

Weeks vs. Calendar Months

Months do not align perfectly with weeks:

  • A 28-day month (February, non-leap) = exactly 4 weeks
  • A 30-day month = 4 weeks + 2 days
  • A 31-day month = 4 weeks + 3 days

This is why payroll and scheduling often use week numbers instead of months. Our Date Difference Calculator can tell you the exact number of weeks between any two dates.
